The PCUSA seems to me a very obvious example of Protestantism going "off the rails". But upon reflection, it becomes clear it went off the rails at the reformation. St. Francis was a reformer, Luther and Calvin were simply not. If there is anything I can do, let me know.

Nick, thanks for that. Yeah doctrines are not isolated. they all tie together and inform each other(as any Calvinist can afirm). The striking thing about the cardinal doctrines of the Reformation is how absent they are in the early church, and how there are OTHER doctrines firmly in their place at that time. Called to Communion has a great article right now that shows this clearly:

http://www.calledtocommunion.com/2011/03/tradition-i-and-sola-fide-2/

-David

-DavidDavid Meyerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06181838722750428356noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5712729947700372149.post-56057243582267024482011-03-09T14:49:12.762-08:002011-03-09T14:49:12.762-08:00David, great article.

It's issues like these that totally 'woke me up' to the real problems of Protestantism, which was essentially that when one error is embraced and dogmatized, other errors will have to also be embraced.Nickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01453168437883536663noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5712729947700372149.post-10656724980507009412011-03-09T13:28:58.164-08:002011-03-09T13:28:58.164-08:00Beautifully said!

I'm not an intellectual but even I can see the multiplicity of conflicting doctrines in my faith. I've been more and more drawn to Catholic teachings. Your article is another that expresses many of my growing frustrations. Thank you for your faithful witness.
RichardRichnHimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09881682293325542005noreply@blogger.com
